Construction Engineering Management Concentration (for CivE Majors)

Apply Civil Engineering Knowledge to Construction Projects

You’ve been building things as far back as you can remember. Now, you see a career overseeing all stages of a construction project. Clarkson University’s construction engineering management concentration sets you on this path.

Courses align with ABET’s defined subdisciplines. Advance your understanding of the principles and current challenges of the construction industry. Start to develop projects, and drive success through collaboration and teamwork.

This concentration is available to Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering students.

Why Study Construction Engineering Management?

Let us help you build your future! Construction engineering is a civil engineering subdiscipline. This field focuses on making civil and architectural designs a physical reality. By knowing all phases of design and construction, you acquire the skills to change the world.

You have the opportunity to gain a specialization. With the construction engineering management concentration, learn about all components going into designing and building a high-rise, a bridge, a wind turbine and many more structures. At the same time, strengthen your problem-solving, leadership and organizational behavior skills.

This knowledge base helps you:

  • Guide projects from conception to completion.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and in line with codes.
  • Develop projects that meet current sustainability initiatives.
  • Become proficient in civil engineering, design, construction management and integrated project delivery.

This skill set not only opens up more job opportunities but increases your potential salary and sets you up for advancement.

Curriculum

  • Construction: Gain the skills needed to tackle the challenges of the construction industry.
  • Engineering: Develop the know-how to apply math and science to meet humankind’s pressing needs. Design solutions that build a sustainable, better world for all.
  • Management: Hone the leadership and interpersonal skills that make teamwork a success. Understand how to meet corporate or organizational needs.

In order to receive a certificate from the Dean of the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering and Applied Sciences for the construction engineering management concentration, undergraduate students must complete all of the following requirements:

Completion of four core courses:

  • CE411 Construction Materials Engineering
  • CE415/515 Foundations, Stability and Retaining Structures
  • CE441 Reinforced Concrete Design
  • CE442 Steel Design

Completion of at least two of the following CE courses:

  • CE304 Introduction to Scheduling and Estimating
  • CE315 Geology for Engineers
  • CE404 Applications in Estimating and Scheduling
  • CE406 Infrastructure Construction
  • CE408 Building Information Modeling/Integrated Project Delivery
  • CE409 Fund. of Building Systems
  • CE410/510 Sustainable Infrastructure and Building
  • CE448 Intro. to Architectural Engineering
  • CE453/553 Properties & Performance of Concrete Materials
  • CE461 Transportation Systems Design

Completion of at least one of the following non-CE courses:

  • OS466 Negotiations & Relationship Management
  • FN361 Financial Management
  • EM/OM 351 Quality Management & Lean Enterprise
  • EM/OM480 Project Management
  • EHS330 Safety Analysis
  • LW270 Law & Society 1
  • LW446 Law of the Workplace
  • COMM417 Business & Professional Speaking

In addition to the required courses, as part of the Professional Experience requirement, students must execute the internship option unless the Director of CEM grants prior approval. Likewise, it is recommended that START 383 (Applied Statistics I) be taken as a mathematics elective course for this concentration. A minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required in the courses taken for the concentration (with at least 25 percent of the credit hours taken at Clarkson University unless approved by the Dean).

Gear your knowledge toward one of two areas:

  • Construction/Infrastructure: This sequence prepares students for a career in heavy construction management. This area exposes you to projects involving large equipment and excavation for highways, roads and other infrastructure improvements.
  • Architectural Engineering & Building Construction: Consider a career in sustainable building design and construction management.

Courses involve extensive hands-on learning. Put your knowledge to use through a construction engineering-focused capstone project. We also recommend you continue practicing your skills with the following:

The construction engineering management concentration provided me with the hands-on learning experience that is priceless in the construction industry. Students have the chance to participate in field trips to different companies, workshops on useful computer programs and skills like field estimating and sessions with professionals in the construction industry. This concentration allowed me to become involved in different SPEED teams and led me to get internship offers months in advance.
